He became involved in language design, helping Niklaus Wirth [14] to design Algol W [15] by bringing in the notion of record (“structure” in C), a programming language invention of which he was proud since it brought to the data side the same kind of structuring mechanism that had been so successful, on the control side, with the control structures of “structured programming”.
